More information:
On the second Saturday in June, knitting enthusiasts can get together and enjoy each other's company, as it is World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIP Day). The first knit in public event was organized in 2005 by Danielle Landes.
Knitting has a reputation of a hobby one does alone. Many people still perceive it as a solitary act, but knitting in a group is becoming more and more popular. World Wide Knit in Public Day was created to bring knitters and entire knitting groups together and make knitting more of a community activity.
WWKIP Day is a perfect occasion for knitters to get out of their houses and go to a local event where they can interact with fellow knitters. Knit in public events are typically organized by local volunteers. Such events are designed to show general public that knitting can be a social activity and that it can be enjoyed by people of different gender, age, and background.
In 2005, about 25 local events were held around the world on the occasion. The number of events has been constantly growing from year to year. As of 2015, more than 42 countries participate in the event, from Australia to Venezuela. WWKIP Day is the world's largest knitter run event. In 2015, it marked its tenth anniversary.
